Doctors from Eyecenter on a mission in Cape Verde!

In October, Dr. De Wilde traveled to the island of Santo Antao in Cape Verde, accompanied by two fellow doctors and a team consisting of three nurses, an optometrist, and a medical assistant.

At the local Dr. Joao Morais Hospital, 20 to 22 functionally blind patients were treated daily, and cataract surgeries were performed simultaneously. These were people who lacked the means to travel to Sao Vicente, where these surgeries are normally performed.

Through these surgeries, we not only restore people’s vision but also give them a sense of independence and reconnect them with their families and communities.

The local ophthalmologist, Dr. Karina Mascarinhas, conducted the preliminary examinations and is now responsible for post-operative care. We also support her with additional training to ensure the sustainability of local care.
